If you have root, follow the root instructions. If you don't, then don't.
Nav Launcher has nothing to do with getting Google Maps Navigation working outside the USA. That's a secondary feature, because people were having problems doing it on their own. Nav Launcher was designed to work alongside Google Maps Navigation. Most of the users are in the USA.
If you want to navigate to a contact, it's 2 taps once you're in Nav Launcher, or 6 once you're in Google Maps. Google Maps has no easy history, and no way of storing favourites without cluttering your homescreen. This is Nav Launcher's purpose.
